Join us for a talk from Booker Prize-winning author Samantha Harvey at Sherborne Abbey, under Luke Jerram's stunning Gaia artwork. On Friday 29 August, 5.30pm for 6pm start. Sherborne Literary Society members £10, non members £12.
Sherborne is welcoming the stunning Gaia touring artwork, created by UK artist Luke Jerram, at Sherborne Abbey, from Friday 29 August to Friday 12 September.
On the opening evening of Friday 29 August, the Sherborne Literary Society will be hosting a talk from Booker Prize-winning author, Samantha Harvey, who will be discussing her novel, Orbital, with Louise Troup.
In Orbital, set over 24 hours aboard the International Space Station, each of the 16 chapters covers a single rotation around the Earth. The six astronauts aboard are there to do crucial work however, they slowly wonder at the Earth’s beauty from space.
It is apt that Samantha's beautiful words have been chosen to open the Gaia exhibition at Sherborne Abbey, as Luke Jerram’s sculpture asks us to see the Earth from space; to imagine a world without borders, and to note our planet’s increasing fragility.
