1 October: The Death of Trotsky

Josh Ireland’s The Death of Trotsky is a gripping account of Stalin’s worldwide pursuit of Trotsky and his ragbag of followers. They posed no realistic threat to Stalin or his brutal regime, but his glowering paranoia demanded that they be hunted down.

Ireland relates how Stalin’s thuggish agents harassed, kidnapped and murdered the dictator's opponents, eventually accounting for Trotsky himself in Mexico City in 1940, with an ice-axe. His murderer was Ramón Mercader del Rio, a strange Communist fellow traveller and conman who came of age in the Spanish Civil War.

It’s a TERRIFIC read, as engaging as any thriller, and this promises to be a highly enjoyable evening. Josh will be in conversation with writer and historian Richard Hopton.
